Color Prints

Each of us has run frantically into our local copier center with an important color document that needs to be duplicated. We also have been shocked by the cost that we were charged for our print job! The average cost for a color copy is $1.00, and many companies don’t realize that may be a real bargain. Color Cost Management from Bay Imaging can change the way a company counts the cost of color printing.

According to new industry estimates, the average company will use color in approximately 40 percent of the documents it creates. This represents an increase of almost 25 percent from prior years. We have come into the age of quality color printing and semi-reasonable rates. If you don’t have a color printer in your company, you will soon! Color prints are a complex item to create and reflect many areas of costs associated with the printed page.

Due to the nature of color prints, it is reasonable to assume that no “average” or standard coverage area can be initially determined. In the Cost Management section of our corporate Website, you will find a downloadable document that provides a 5 percent coverage example. You will discover that no document using any color will generally dispense pages with such a limited coverage or “saturation” area.

Bay Imaging recognizes that your organization needs the output and productivity from your color devices at equal or greater levels than you expect from the other printers on your network. The Cost Management program that is created for your organization will consider many factors when estimating your color cost per page. The resolution (dpi-dots per inch) factors in the distribution of toner on your printed page. When color documents are created, they tend to have high resolution and deep colors and coverage.

According to color industry experts, the average color document has a coverage area of 60-80 percent. When you consider that figure is multiplied with each color toner, it becomes easy to see how costs can become unmanageable. With the toner yields suggested by the major manufacturers, it is reasonable to assume that your full-color documents would exceed the standard 5 percent by 400 percent or more!

If a simple CMYK document was printed in full color, it would be created using each toner; therefore, the saturation would be in excess of 20 percent, minimum. This equates to an average industry cost of between .20 and .50 per page. As we increase the size of the color images, our saturation and toner usage increases dramatically.

The type, speed, and size of printed documents all factor into the overall color cost of printing. What does all of this mean to my company? It means expense, unknown, and unmanaged!

The Bay Imaging program will incorporate the color devices into your total managed environment. The average cost per page will be established and will be maintained, unless unusual print requirements are requested. This allows you to pay only for the color prints that you make, leaving the toners, parts and service up to us!
